The retirement of the last official U.S. Coast Guard lighthouse keeper marks the end of a significant chapter in maritime history. Sally Snowman, who has been the caretaker of Boston Light since 2003, is stepping down from her role at the historic lighthouse - an iconic navigational aid since 1716.
Snowman, the first woman to hold this position and Boston Light's
70th caretaker, has been a passionate custodian, handling everything from maintaining the light and foghorn, which are now automated, to cleaning and landscaping. Snowman's tenure at the lighthouse is filled with memorable experiences, from writing three books about Boston Light to surviving intense storms like the 2013 blizzard. However, like all good stories, things come to an end - hers at 72 years old and serving the light house for over two decades.
